MY COMMENT ON JAPAN'S TRAGEDY,,

"Fukushima: What happened - and what needs to be done"

In my opinion it has been a huge tragedy! Japanese people lives have changed overnight because of an earthquake which has had many terrible consequences, such as the destruction of flats and houses or the little escape of radioactive residues from nuclear stations. What can I say about this? Can we really blame someone for this nuclear failure? There are many opinions about this fact and most of them aren't really positive. Well, I have read some news about this awful fact and I reached some conclusions:

Maybe this nuclear stations were settled down in a very inappropriate place because they were really close to the sea and, as everyone knows, when earthquakes took place in the sea they destroy anything which surrounds it.

Furthermore, media around the world turns this fact into a tragedy while Japanese media says that there's no reason to panic. So, I wonder...which one says the truth? I think that Japan will be able to handle this because it's a rich and developed country but nuclear residues are really damaging and its consequences can affect us and our world even in the most imperceptible way.

Finally, I think that Japan must be helped by other rich countries such as China or USA on solving the consequences of this nuclear crisis. In any case, it's a serious thing and everyone should be aware of the dangers of nuclear power, although they cannot be seen immediately, because they can really damage Japan.

MY FINAL POST,,

I don't know exactly how to begin this post because I know it will be the last one, so I don't want to forget anything important to say!

First of all, I have to say that it has been a year of a lot of changes for me in any sense. Personally, some old feelings have sprouted new shoots in me and now I know for sure that I'm completely incapable to leave them behind. Regarding my studies I've lived the most stressful year of my life! I had exams almost every week and also projects such as the endless research project. Nevertheless, there's just one thing which always remains wonderful to me: my family and my best friends! I'm a brave girl but without them I couldn't handle so many things! Don't take me wrong, I'm able to overcome any trouble on my own but if I hadn't them by my side I wouldn't have grounds for keep on fighting.

So, after telling you a little bit of my life I'm focusing on English subject. Well, what can I say about English? I adore it! When I have to do some homework from other subjects I probably found it quite boring but when I have to do something in English it doesn't took a lot of effort to me because I really love it.

Furthermore, this year our studies of English have been really gratifying! We've been practising English in any possible way: with listenings of any topic; writings from formal letters to news of nowadays facts; videos such as the Obama's speech (which I really liked), films, exercises photocopies and many more things...In my opinion all those things have been useful to everyone in class.

Nevertheless, I could realize that in my class there were many different levels of English. So, although our teacher tried to teach us all the necessary things to learn English and to get a good mark on Selectivitat as well she also had to reduce class level. I think it's fair, it's the plain truth, but maybe I'd liked to learn many more difficult things or, for example, do more listenings such the videos we saw in class.

However, I love my class and my classmates! So English classes were both educational and enjoyable! I really had a good time in all those hours! I also like our English teacher very much because she's always a positive woman and she's always saying that she believes in us, so she gives us straight one way or another.

As I said before, I love English so I'm always trying to learn a little bit more of it! For example, when I'm at home I watch many TV series in English with subtitles. I wish I was able someday to understand them without this little help! Anyway, I learn very much doing it by the time! Now, I just have finished my favourite ones and I'm looking forward to see new episodes! I don't know if you like them, but my favourite TV series nowadays are “The Big Bang Theory”, “Desperate Housewives” and “Sex and the City”. Woooooow, they're so amazing! With the first one I've learnt many jokes, play on words and especially how to say sarcastic sentences! With the second one I've learnt many more things such as phrasal verbs as “Knock it off”, “Don't get me wrong”, or also new sentences to me such as “How you dare?”, “I really mean it” or “Are you bribing me?”. Finally form the third one I've learnt lots of things which can be useful to conversations or writings, but I also learnt things which I should never use in a formal conversation or in my school homework. Moreover, I watch videos, films, reports, I read news and blogs...but what I like the most are songs! I love to learn all the lyrics of the songs I like and then understand what they mean. It seems a nonsense, but most of the words or sentences I use in my writings come from songs I've heard.

I think that's the reason why I like to do an English blog! I believe it is a good way to show our knowledge and also, even if we don't realize about it, our true feelings! Last year I spent so many hours writing my blog! But I swear I truly enjoyed every one of them! I talked about happiness, about life's sense, about love (I think I did it many times), about beauty and our society, about famous characters who I really admire... Unfortunately, this year our blog should be focus on real facts. I'm not trying to say that it wasn't a good idea...quite the opposite! It supposed a great effort to me so I think that I unconsciously leave my personal life apart to be able to understand other people's life or other facts which are completely alien to me. I'm a very sensitive person and for me it's almost impossible hide my feelings or my thoughts. However, I know that in a future, when I grow up and I finally get a job I will have to leave my feelings aside frequently, so it has been a very gratifying experience to me!

Lastly, I can't complain of anything but the time! If only I hadn't got so many exams and homework I could have done a wonderful job! Time went flying so I tried to do my best although when it seemed impossible. In any case, I'm quite proud of all the work I've done during all these year and I truly believe that anything of what I've done has been in vain! I made the most of my time to get a nice result and I think I almost get one of my main objectives!

This is it, Batxillerat is finally over and I'll miss so much all the things I've lived these wonderful two years! I just don't know what else to say, I just can tell you that there are so many feelings mixed in my stomach right now! I suppose they are nerves, joy, worries...which are always with me when I'm feeling both happy and lost with so many new things to come...!

GRANDPA I DON'T WANT TO BE A FARMER...I WANT TO BE A DOCTOR!

A grandfather is talking to his grandson about the really important things in life. He also wants him to know their family traditions, their origins, and especially tell him that he and his ancestors put in a lot of effort to RAISE UP their children...Bobby (grandfather) is an elderly man and an experimented farmer as well. He was born in a farmhouse close to his family’s farm. Since he was a child he helped all his family in everything he could and he has completely devoted himself to his farm tasks, so he has spent all his life working really hard in order to earn enough money to live happily. Nevertheless, the atmosphere becomes tense when his grandson confesses him he doesn’t want to KEEP ON his family traditions anymore. Everything happened like this…

-Hi little Johnny!

-Hi grandpa! Is everything alright?

-Oh…yes! Yes, yes it is! Everything is fine!

-Are you ok grandpa? You seem quite worried but I don’t know why…

-Well, the truth is that there’s something I’d like to tell you…

-What do you want to tell me? What has happened grandpa?

-No, no…nothing has happened. It’s just about you and me and our family traditions.

-Oh, thanks God! I was expecting bad news!

-No…It’s just that we have never talked about this before and…you know, I know it’s silly but I don’t know exactly how to begin…

-Don't worry! It’s alright grandpa. Take your time, I’ve got all the time of the world to hear you!

-I know, I know…You’re a really nice guy Johnny and you have GROWN UP so quickly… I’m sure you’ll be a great family man!

-Oh…KNOCK IT OFF grandpa! I think I know what you mean…

-Johnny, don’t you misbehave please! I’m just saying that you are already sixteen and you should start thinking about KEEPING UP WITH your family traditions!

-No grandpa…I have told you this hundreds of times! I GET ACROSS your good intentions, but I don’t want to be a farmer. I want to be a doctor grandpa…the best one! And I want to travel around the world to cure the needy!

-But this is your home Johnny! That’s the only place you must LAY DOWN in! My ancestors SETTELED DOWN in Wisteria Lane many years ago and since then all of them have worked in this job! Why do you want to RUN AWAY from us?

-I don’t want to RUN AWAY grandpa! You know I love my family with all my heart. However, times have changed and I have a future out there which could be amazing! So, if something goes wrong out there, I’m ready to PAY FOR the consequences of my acts.

-Sorry dear, I cannot understand you…

-I’m not ASKING FOR your understanding , I just want you to support me in everything I do as I’ll do with you!

-Oh, son! I love you too much to be angry with you! Have for sure that I’ll be by your side, no matter the way you take!

-Oh…you’re wonderful grandpa! I truly love you!

-I love you too my little Johnny.

-I’ve already SIGNED UP a registration to study in Oxford’s University.

-And when will you leave?

-I’m GOING OFF to London next month!

-Oh, God, so soon? I can’t believe it!

-Yes, grandpa! I’m already a big boy, don’t you forget it!

-Yes, I know…It’s just that I’ll miss you so much!

-Me too grandpa, but I promise I’ll visit you every holidays.

-I hope so! And I promise I’ll SEE you OFF at the airport every time you leave!

-Ok, I’m glad to hear it!

-I hope life treats you well. You deserve the best son!

-You too grandpa. And now…why don’t we go downtown? I’m hungry and we could have breakfast together! What do you say?

-I think this is a great idea my little Johnny!

LIFE IS WONDERFUL,,

"It's time to come together. What's important is not what's gone, but what remains"

There’s a lot of meaning in that sentence.

Nowadays, our world is evolving very quickly and it seems that we aren’t able to stop it. We human have created television when the only way of being aware of the world’s news was the radio; we have created computers and mobile phones to be able of communicate with everyone we want, no matter how far is that person from us; we have created a lot of ways of producing electricity because in the beginning the only light human could enjoy was the sun light; we also have discovered petrol, which is all the automobile’s fuel, we have discovered golden, diamonds… and we have created coins and bills, which are known as money, as a way to exchange products.

We can assure that the world has been unbelievably changed thanks to human’s innovations. But my great question is…are all this innovations something positive? Have we changed the world for good or for ill?

If we stop thinking for a while we would realize that there are in the world many proofs which show the damaging caused by human on Earth. We have built countless industries around the world during all these years and these industries give off great quantities of toxic residues up to our atmosphere. As a result of this, in Australia there’s already a hole in the ozone layer. Furthermore, our automobiles’ combustible generates also toxic fumes which become a great contribution to our world’s pollution. Pollution especially affects the big cities, and nowadays if you go to any capital or big city in the world you will realize that there is not much fresh air in there. You also will see that people who lives there walks in a stressful way, eats fast and doesn’t pay much attention to the things which really matter in life such as relationships or our health.

I know that it may sound alarming, but those are the harsh facts. Moreover, we cannot forget the injustices and inequalities which exist around the world. Rich countries have granted privileges themselves and have taken over the entire world’s source of income. So, even if they’re going through bad times they know for sure they will be helped by any other privileged country. Meanwhile, the inhabitants of poor countries are obligated to resign themselves to living a situation completely opposite. They have to work plenty of hours for the minimum wage which is used to be the half or one third of the rich countries’ minimum wage. In addition, the great majority of them work in deplorable conditions and live in unsteady constructions.

Well, those are only some of the world’s differences between classes and/or countries. That’s the reason why I think that from now on we should leave our differences aside and we should fight together for what joins us and makes us equal: OUR WORLD. There cannot be the slightest doubt that everyone of us knows that we cannot get it if we just keep looking for our own good.

Therefore, there’s only a possible solution. We have damaged enough the environment with our selfish behaviour and now it’s time to take care of it. There are still a lot of things to do and we still have the chance of return the world anything it deserves to preserve its original beauty. If we act properly we will save a lot of species in extinction, we will preserve more quantities of water, we will reduce pollution so we will contribute in the conservation of the Poles or finally enjoy of fresh air…

Unfortunately, this act involves a great work for our part. Furthermore, it also involves a lot of money (for example: if we want to make the world a better place we have to use renewable energy and it needs a lot of economic help) and especially each one’s completely unselfish will. This is it. So, as the saying goes: IF THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY.

MY FORMAL LETTER,,

9 Major Square
SANT PERE PESCADOR 17470
GIRONA (SPAIN)
Nuclear Organization

14th April 2011

Mr. John Rich World Nuclear Organization director general
123 OXFORD STREET
NEW YORK (U.S.)
WIX 3CXA

Dear Mr John Rich,

I am writing this letter in order to let you know my opinion about nuclear energy and the nuclear industries.

First of all, I would like to say that although nuclear industries are producing nearly half of the world’s energy such as illumination or electricity, they are really dangerous both for our health and especially for our life.

I would like to emphasize the fact that we live in a world surrounded by new technologies and almost everyone of us depends on computers, mobile phones, television…So, I can admit that all those types of energy have become essential to us.

Nevertheless, as I said before, the energy produced on nuclear stations can become really damaging to our health. A recent example of it was the leakage of one of the Japan’s nuclear stations. That is the reason why I am wondering if it is useful producing so much energy from those places.

On the other hand, I would like to remind you that we are all in danger nowadays because everyone of us lives surrounded by nuclear stations. So, a little failure in the procedures of any nuclear station would immediately become a great disaster. It could cause death and many incurable diseases as well.

Finally, I would like to propose you many other ways of producing energy, especially renewable energy. I know for sure that building those nuclear stations can be expensive but it would provide us doses of energy which would not be damaging for the environment and it could be used over and over again.

So, I will be really grateful to you if you reconsider my proposal. Perhaps with each other’s help we would make the world a better place to live. Furthermore, the use of renewable energies would ensure us a safer and healthier life because it would reduce all the pollution caused by nuclear stations and also their dangers.

Lastly, I just like to remind that I would really appreciate your opinion about my letter.

Yours sincerely,

ARIADNA VILÀ

SOUL IN THE 60's: THE PRIDE OF BLACK IDENTITY (MY ORAL PRESENTATION)

Hi! My name is Ariadna Vilà and I’d like to show you my research project entitled “Soul in the sixties: the pride of black identity”. First of all, I will say that I’ve chosen this topic because I really love music. I like almost all music styles, especially jazz. I started searching some information in music books or in my computer and I learnt really useful things to me such as jazz origins or its sugenres. However, soul became the most fascinating style for me. I hardly knew anything about it or about jazz history so, I though that this project would be a good way to learn while I work on it. Furthermore, I have always felt admiration for black singers and for the way they are and I discovered that my favourite ones start succeeding in the sixties. My research project is aimed at explaining the features of soul music whereas its historical context and all the outstanding facts happened before and after its birth. So, I write some information about the history of the fifties and the sixties. I also talk about all the previous music styles which were known before soul’s birth. In addition, I chose two male and two female singers of the sixties and I wrote a short biography of them. Then, I talk about their music relating it to their lives and the time they lived in. Furthermore, I compare all of them to see the differences and similarities between each other and finally I draw my own conclusions. In short, my research project is focused in the soul era and its evolution during the sixties. On one hand, I picked up the information in books specializing in this topic and I summarized the most impotant facts in my own words. On the other hand, I searched the rest of the information in different web sites. Instead of carrying out an option poll I chose some songs from each singer and I worked on them: I explained their meaning, I relate the lyrics to an historical context and to the biography of the singer. Finally, I wrote the features of the soul music which were constant in them. As you can see and hear I’ve done my whole project in English. I chose this lenguage because I like it and I though that it would be a good way to improve my level while I’m learning useful things. Well, I will tell you some information about soul music: In the mid-fifties jazz music was in a tight spot so SOUL was one of its greatest hopes to recuperate its audience. Of course, it succeeded. Soul was a variety of jazz listened during the civil rights act so because of it “black power” appeared. Soul’s origins are in the United States, particularly in Chicago, in the late fifties. It was based on blues (without evoking his negativity), r&B and gospel. Catchy rhythms accompanied by handclaps and extemporaneous body moves, are typical features of soul music. There are also other common characteristics such as call and response between the singer and the chorus, tense vocal sounds, extemporized additions or twirls. It’s main instruments are guitar, bass, piano, organ, drums, horn section and keyboards. Ray Charles is known as the main inventor of the soul genre in the fifties with his great hit “I Got a Woman”. He did it mixing blues, gospel, rhythm and blues and a bit of country elements and adding especially his personal touches. Many famous soul singers such as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles or James Brown supported the black identity with their music. It’s necessary to emphasize the fact that James Brown was the creator of new styles, as funk soul, through the original soul music. It happened by the early 70’s, when soul music had been influenced by psychedelic rock. In short, soul represented the new importance of the black identity and its culture so black population feel very identified with this music. As jazz music, soul has its own subgenres and each one has different features. Soul influenced many artists during its most successful decades. For example, in churches organ players turned this instrument into a genre on its own: Organ’s sound transmitted optimism and it made the walls vibrate so people liked it because it reminded them of soul essence. Well, now I'm going to talk about ARETHA FRANKLIN and then I'm going to show you an example of the practical work I've done. Aretha Louise Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee (1942). She’s known as “The Queen of Soul” and she is the female artist who has the most million-selling singles. Her father was a famous Baptist preacher and her mother was a gospel singer and pianist. Aretha was a prodigy child. She learned to play the piano on her own and she had a powerful voice. She recorded her first gospel album at the age of fourteen. In 1960, she travelled to New York with her father’s blessing. There she signed with some record companies but she didn’t get the absolutely fame until she recorded her feminist version of “Respect” After several years of failed recordings in the 70’s, Aretha’s success remerged with “Think” . Nowadays, she lives alone in Detroit, Michigan and she only sing esporadically as she did in Obama’s ceremony. “RESPECT” (1967) This song was originally written and sung by the famous soul singer Otis Redding. Aretha took this song and turned it into the anthem of the feminist movement in the sixties. Aretha get the absolutely fame with this song and she won many prizes as well. In 1966 was formed a feminist group called “National Organization for Women” and Aretha’s song was her way to back this initiative. “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” (x8 at least) It’s one of the most repeated words. She wants equality. In her time women were considered an inferior being and racial segregation wasn’t still abolished at all. Respect was one of the commonest words in those times because the main objective of the black community, especially black women, was be respected for the others. “(just a little bit)” (x24) She doesn’t want a radical change right now, but she definitely wants to see a little change in men’s behaviour towards women. This time she is helped for a chorus: it is a common feature of soul music. While the singer is playing the song there are some people behind her who repeat the most outstanding sentences. In this case, it is useful to remark her request. Aretha and all women in her society wanted to be treated with the same rights that men had so “Respect” represents the protest of hundreds of women who wanted a change. Nowadays, Aretha is still an example to all the women: it means that in her way she won the battle against men. CONCLUSIONS: And as a conclusion… First of all, I have to say that from the first moment I thought that soul was a music style bigger than jazz. I only new a few things about it and, of course, I was completely wrong. To my great surprise, I found out that soul was just a little part of jazz history it represented the voice of hundreds of people who wanted to be heard. Soul singers supported black people with their music: they had enough influence to get to politicians and other important people’s ears. This was the main reason why they were so admired artists. They were true artists so they rose to the challenge in their live shows. Nowadays the situation is quite the opposite: Most of the famous singers have been known for their appearance: they use to look like a model. Unfortunately, not many people care about their talent for singing. Secondly, I’ve learnt much more than I thought both vocabulary and culture knowledge. For example, before doing this project I didn’t know the name of any instrument or technique of playing them. Now, I know what is drum, horn or <>. I also have learnt other new words and terms. I’ve written some words with its meaning in Spanish in the last pages as appendixes. I did it to show that this project has been really useful to me because I have improved a lot my English vocabulary. Moreover, I didn’t know anything about fifties and sixties history and I found it really interesting. I believe that everyone should know important things like these because we use to think that past facts aren’t useful but if we want to be intelligent adults in a future and be able to talk to anyone we have to get ourselves some culture. with my research project I realized that sixties music was wonderful. I do love it and all related to it. The point is that I’ve learnt a lot of things which were completely unknown to me before. So, I believe that I have carried out the most important objective of my work at least. Anyway, I began working on it quite late so I didn’t have as much time as I’d like to have. This lack of time has limited me a lot so I haven’t been able to talk about all the things which were due in my introduction. Even so, I have always been very motivated because I really feel like working this topic. There aren’t many differences between men. They are daring, cheerful and very professional. They both had a hard childhood: Even so, it couldn’t stop them.. Their beginnings weren’t easy: they played music in the streets or with different bands so they didn’t earn much money. Finally, they become famous and they could show what they worth. On the other hand they spent all his life fighting for black people’s right and supporting them. Apart from their drug addiction, they were considered a good influence because they could gave up their principles but they didn’t. They both suffered from cancer: Ray Charles died because of it but Brown recovered. On the contrary, I’ve seen a lot of differences between Aretha Franklin and Betty Harris. Aretha was an absolutely diva: she was self-confident, proud of being a woman and able of overcoming any obstacle. She had an amazing voice and her songs used to be the anthem of the feministic movement. She was a great example for black women. For her part, Betty was a typical submissive woman. She was a good singer but she always superimposed his role in the society to her job. The only similar things between them are that they were born into a family of preachers and they both travelled to New York City to get fame. They both transmitted different feeling throught their songs: Aretha’s ones sounded cheerful and catchy but Betty one’s has a slow rhythm because they use to be soul ballads. On the whole, Aretha is more comparable to male artists. She has a lot of common features with them: she’s proud of being black, she has social engagements with her race but she’s happy with this, she’s a free person and her music is a reflection of her personality and her principles: mainly she talks about true feelings and the fight for black people’s rights. For her part, feminism is a really common topic as well. They were people with overcoming capacity and any obstacle could never stop them. As a final conclusion, I must say that all the work I’ve done during these months will be always useful to me. I have known really important facts and from this moment I consider myself a sixties music lover. I’m proud of have chosen this topic because it has been more enjoyable than I thought. Finally, I can assure that my effort has been worth. MY OPINION: I really enjoyed working on this topic because I've been interested in music since I was a child. At first, I didn't spend much time on this. I just searched some information but days went by and my project wasn't still done. However, I love the topic I had chosen so I decided to make the most of the rest of my time. I must confess that I though I wouldn't be capable of finishing my project because I wanted to talk about a lot of songs, music styles, singers...but I was completely running out of time!! Anyway, I strived a lot to get great resoults, and I think with it I carried out my main objective. Regarding to my oral presentation I have some remarks. On the one hand, I studied my writting a lot. I did the same when I had to do the oral presentation of my research project so, it wasn't a difficult thing to me because I knew exactly what I was talking about and I still remembered a lot of parts of my summary. On the other hand, I have to say that nerves played a dirty trick on me! It is a common thing on me and I really hate it! Unfortunately, there's no way to avoid it for me! Despite this unfortunate fact, my main aim was show everyone my interest and my knowlege of everything I was talking about. If I just get this then I'll be very happy! What it really means is that I've enjoyed very much working on this topic and I hope my friends have enjoyed my oral presentation as much as I did.

HUMAN RIGHTS

1. What are human rights?

To me, Human Rights are sort of laws which are especially aimed at protecting every person’s moral integrity or freedom. They consist of thirty different articles which tackle really outstanding matters such as racism, sexism, child exploitation… in order to prove that everyone is entitled to being respected. Also, they demand equality in the world: it makes no difference to race, genre, age or religion because all people deserve a fair treatment. Prejudices or discrimination are some products of the lack of knowledge in society which is often fraught with dangers such as violence: arguments, fights or even war. That’s the reason why Human Rights are necessary: they must solve conflicts of interest or ideas without resorting to force in any case. The fact is that we all have certain rights just because we are human beings and since we are born we have to learn how to live peacefully with each other. So, if anyone tries to violate any of these entitlements, this one will be punished.

2. When did human rights start?
3.
Why thet were created?

People have always been concerned about Human Rights since their origins and even in some old civilizations, such as Greeks, there were some unwritten rules which remind of Human Rights’ intention. Nevertheless, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted for the first time by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. Then, World War II had come to an end so Human Rights were, in some sense, a protest against all the atrocities involved with it: unfair assassinations, poverty, whole destroyed towns…
Finally, Human Rights became an international law in 1976.

4. How many human rights are there?

There are thirty articles based on human rights. Each one of them deals with different matters but there's always some connection between them. The main intentions of Human Rights are: freedom, equality and respect. It means they’re not exactly laws, they’re simply natural rights. We should know that we are born with them, but people sometimes seem to forget it. So, that’s the reason why they’re in writing and considered essential rules; it’s the only way to make sure of anyone’s concern for them.

5. Which human right were you not familiar with?

Before doing this project, I wasn’t aware of some human rights which are essential to everyone. The article which had impressed me much was the 11th one “We are always innocent till proven guilty". I’m really interested in law and all concerned with this. I watch TV programmes about crimes, unsettled cases…so; I’ve learned few important things about this topic. I heard of hard sentences while I was watching this, even I heard of death penalty. Nevertheless, I wasn’t aware of this sort of law and I think everyone should know it and especially respect it. It’s good to know that fair rights like this exist in our society.

6. Choose one human right and discuss:

I’ve chosen “WE ARE ALL BORN FREE AND EQUAL”.

In my opinion it’s maybe the most known human right, but it’s the article which I feel most identified with. Firstly, I must say we live in a full of hate and prejudices society which use to be dangerous for certain people. When I say “danger” I refer, as an example, to racial discrimination or sexism. Secondly, I’d like to emphasise the fact that we’re living in a really modern time and there’s more freedom to express the feelings, likes and dislikes of anyone tan ever was. Anyway, some intolerable behaviour hasn’t disappeared at all. Thanks to new technologies and new discoveries, most of the society’s rate of developing never stops. It has a lot of positive points, such as make life easier and more comfortable. Otherwise, there are also many negative points which are important to remember.

On the one hand, there are thousands and thousands of people who cannot access to these privileges . The worst thing about this is that the great majority of them are from Africa, Asia, or South America, so when they try to start a new life in another richer country they have to overcome many obstacles, and sometimes it is very hard to do. In many cases, they’re families or couples who just want to earn enough money to live happily. Nevertheless, things are never easy for them and people us to consider those people problematic and even a nuisance, when they’re just trying to survive. I think this isn’t fair!! On the other hand, there’s not many people trying to change this situation, and that’s probably the worst part about this fact. Human beings who live in rich countries use to consider that poor people have to live away from them because they consider them a great threat, so they’re just afraid of losing their money and their business (the only things which they are worried about).

From my point of view, this behaviour doesn’t derives benefit and, of course, it becomes harmful both for victims and guilty ones. I also have to say that although people have changed a lot their mind towards society there are still a loooooooooooot of them with a reactionary attitude which I consider even outrageous than their ancestors attitude was. There’s no possible justification for judge or look down on someone just because this person is a woman, has different habits and believes, has a different colour of skin, is homosexual… because those things doesn’t mean anything. A person isn’t good for these features but for the feelings which has in his/her heart.

Actually, we are all the same: we love, we suffer, we laugh when something makes us happy, we cry when things tourn into troubles, we miss someone when we use to spend a lot of time with that person, we have insecurity, we have a lot of virtues but we have much more faults, sometimes we feel beautiful and sometimes all the contrary, all of us have wishes to come true, all of us would be able to kill someone for our loved ones, we dream about our the most impossible things especially when we are awake, we can touch the sky of happiness an in a minute we can feel upset or sad for anything…so, is anyone able to tell the difference between an African Boy, an Asian girl and me? Only the external appearance changes, but the colour of the heart is always the same. I’d like to stop this situation and live all peacefully in the world, giving to the poorest more privileges and opportunities to get the life they deserve and especially apply a law which forces the richest to a little part of their fortune to the needy ones.

7. Are Humans rights relevant in the world today? Why?

Yes, they’re the most essential laws in the world. If we want to make the world a peacefully place we need to follow each one of them, always. In my opinion, governs must apply harder sentences to people who breaks some of these laws because they have to be completely respected to work properly. With a little effort and collaboration these articles would be able to create a fairest world.

Do you remember "Shall we dance?"

-Hey JOHN! Do you remember the film we watch last night?
-Of course I remember it...it was wonderful!
-Would you like to replay the best scenes with me?
-Ok, I'll do it.
-OK. I have the dialogues right here. I will be Mrs Clark and you will be the private detective, right?
-Ok...So, you start talking.

<<-Dance lessons? My husband is taking dance lessons?
-Well…I saw worse things in these years. Consider you lucky!
-And who’s that beautiful girl, woman? Who’s she?
-Hmm…She’s his teacher.
-Anyway, why you think people get married?
-Passion!
-No…
-Oh, interesting! Because I was taking you for a romantic woman.
-People get married because we need a witness to our life. Because there’s million people on the world but we need someone to take care of us always, everyday…>>
-Let's do another scene, please!!
-OK, but do you promise it will be the last one?
-I promise.
-Ok...and who I am supposed to be now?
-You'll be Babi and Mr Clark and I'll be Babi's daughter Tina and Mrs Mitzzie. Let's start!

<<(Tina)-And it’s getting so boring mum…
(Babi)-Shut up Tina
(T)-No, you shut up. (To the others) She’s working 20 hours a day, cleaning, and buying her crazy costumes and at night she plays Cinderella in the theatre. When are you going to rest at home?
(B)-I don’t need to rest
(T)-Oh, and I know you Mr Clark. She talked me about you and about your sweet smell.
(B)-Oh, ok…kill me now!
(Mitzie)-No, it’s alright. I smelt him too and it’s no bad. I mean he don’t smell like flowers after spring rain but it’s ok.
(Clark)-I’ve never talked about this…>>

-Oh, thank you John! I had a lot of fun with you!!!
-Oh...you're welcome! We can repeat it another day if you want to.
-Really? I'd love to!!!

MY MAIL

Hi Elizabeth! Is everything alright? I hope so =)

I don’t know exactly how to begin this mail because I want to tell you many things! Perhaps, introducing myself would be a good way to start.

As you should know, my name’s Ariadna Vilà and I’m seventeen years old. I live in Sant Pere Pescador and I have two brothers, the old one is twenty six years old and the little one is only eight. I study in “Ies Castelló d’Empúries” since I was twelve but this will be my last year here. I have enjoyed very much my years spent in this school and I’ve met wonderful people as well.
However, I want you to talk about my future, about my dreams, my purposes…

Last year I was really scared because most of my friends knew exactly what they wanted to study or what they would do in their futures but I couldn’t see clear my way yet. I though that it would be a great problem: time goes very fast and in the twinkling of an eye I would be in a college studying anything which isn’t for me.

I needed ideas, and especially, I had to talk about it with people who were able to help me. This summer I worked in my parents’ restaurant, so I thought very much in my future and I asked my cousins to give me help (they worked with me as well).
Finally, I could see everything clear. The first question anyone can ask you is…What do you like, maths or languages? I have no doubts with it. I love languages and everything related to them. Secondly, I promise myself to study some thing which really cares for me and don’t ever have to be sorry of my decision. It took me few months but now, I know what I’m going to do.

I love languages (learn, speak, write…) they are absolutely my favourite subject but I’m afraid that nowadays “translation and interpretation” career doesn’t have much request. I decided to study “journalism" career. Anyway, my biggest challenge is study languages while I study my career. Obama’s video let me think about my goals, and this is my main goal right now. I know it’ll be a hard work, but if I want to get it I will have to prove I really deserve it.

I’ll try to believe in myself even when things will go wrong. I’ll refuse to give up on myself because now I know that there’s no excuse for not try. In a future, if I want to pay my bills and make my sons proud of their mother I have to work with all my own. It definitely will be a hard struggle, but I’ll do it for me and for my loved ones. Of course, everyone knows that college years are the best time of students’ life, and I’ll enjoy them as much as possible.

I’m sure I’ll have failures, I will be scared of a lot of things and sometimes I will feel that my fight has no sense. But when I finish with everything I’ll be able to look back smiling regretting nothing because every second of my struggle will be worth.

Best wishes,
ARIADNA

LITTLE JOHNNY'S JOKE

"Jesus Is In The Bathroom"

A Sunday School teacher of preschoolers was concerned that his students might be a little confused about Jesus Christ because of the Christmas season emphasis on His birth. He wanted to make sure they understood that the birth of Jesus occurred a long time ago, that He grew up, etc. So he asked his class, "Where is Jesus today?"

Steven raised his hand and said, "He's in heaven."
Mary was called on and answered, "He's in my heart."
Little Johnny, waving his hand furiously, blurted out, "I know! I know! He's in our bathroom!!!"
The whole class got very quiet, looked at the teacher, and waited for a response. The teacher was completely at a loss for a few very long seconds. He finally gathered his wits and asked Little Johnny how he knew this. And Little Johnny said, "Well...every morning, my father gets up, bangs on the bathroom door, and yells 'Jesus Christ, are you still in there?!'"

MY LAST WRITING,,

This year I start studying Batxillerat. At first, I wasn’t really motivated, but then I saw everything clear, and I tried to work hard. It doesn’t seem to care, but I can assure that any little effort can be a great help to us. Learn something new will always be useful for us. My favourite subject is English, of course. From the first day I was giving my best to learn much and be able to improve my English level!

I really believe that I’ve improved my English a lot this year. The best example of it is my blog. My blog is my way to go away from everything. I like to write all my thoughts there because there are always so many things rounding my head that it’s impossible to do not write them down. I often talk about feelings, especially about love. The reason why I have so many writings about this topic is that I feel really indentified with it, and probably the great majority of my thoughts are related to it. Moreover, I think that if I talk about something which really matters to me I will be able to be interest in it much more in my redaction and also I will try to express my true opinion about it properly.

Maybe I saw a great change in my writing comparing my first your-say with my last your-say. My first your-say was a Coldplay’s song called “Fix You”. It’s a lovely song and I like it very much, so I decided to start with it my blog. Now, I’m writing this post again and I can believe how much my your-says have changed during this year. In this post I only wrote a short opinion which deals with feelings. To write it I used simply adjectives and quite repetitive sentences in order to get a nice opinion. From this writing until now I have learnt much more vocabulary, linking words or phrasal verbs. So, with them it’s easier to do better writings. And even I’ve learnt expressions and idioms as: “In the twinkling of an eye” or “what goes around…comes around”

On the contrary, when I read my post called “A BRONX TALE” I’m not able to remember how I could make up it. This time, I tried to use many more linking words, 1st and 2nd conditionals (because we’re studying them in class), short and long sentences but well sorted out and especially new vocabulary. I also wrote down two important morals, and I explain them from my point of view. Since 2009 until now my English has become terribly changed! And I’m really happy for it!

In “Fix You” I wrote sentences as “FIX YOU talks about sadness, about how difficult is love, about real down feelings, about how difficult is to find the happiness” or “There's always someone who wants to make you happy”
but in “A BRONX TALE” my sentences were as: “Everyone knows that Sonny is really vengeful and that he has no qualms”, “he tries desperately to stop it and make his son realized that he’s heading for a trouble” or “once more: if you sometimes try to stop thinking selfishly in yourself and give your help to the people who really need it, always remember that your acts won’t be on vain”
“FIX YOU”:

“A BRONX TALE”:
http://somewhereonlyweknoow.blogspot.com/2010/05/bronx-tale.html

If I had to say an effective way to learn English it would be my blog with no doubt. I’m really interested in English and I know I still have a very low level of pronouncing and writing. That’s the reason why I’m always looking up new words, or trying to add things I’ve learnt in class during this year. Probably, the best reflection of my improvement is one of my 3rd term writings: “THINGS WHICH MAKE LIFE WONDERFUL”. Before writing it, I couldn’t imagine that I would get a post like this! To me, I got a pretty good result! I want you to explain how I wrote it…if I remember well, it was a typical Tuesday or Wednesday, I was in my grandma’s house studying because the next day I has a difficult exam. I wasn’t very concentrated on my notes because as usual I was in my own world. Suddenly, an idea appeared in my head: How many things make life wonderful? Would it be a good topic to talk about? And following it I caught a paper and I started writing every sentence which was in my thoughts. The final result of it was: “THINGS WHICH MAKE LIFE WONDERFUL”, as you can see:
http://somewhereonlyweknoow.blogspot.com/2010/05/things-which-make-life-wonderful.html

However, read some books (The Diary of Adrian Mole, Frankenstein and Sense & Sensibility), speaking English in class, do oral presentations and listenings are useful to learn English. Furthermore, another useful way to learn a language (apart from writing a blog) is watch TV and movies in English, or in the language you want to learn. I prefer to have subtitles on it, because I can see exactly what the characters are saying and I try to remember new words and expressions. My eldest brother likes to watch TV in English since he was living in Australia, but he prefers to see it with no subtitles instead of reading them. So, when I’m with him we watch TV series or movies in original version.
Therefore, I believe that they’re both good ways to learn.

The best pieces of advice I can give you is that every little thing you learn will never be useless. Everything you learn will give you more knowledge and might be useful to you in the future. So, don’t ever thing that a writing or maybe a simply song won’t give you anything, because even if it seems quite difficult, if you carry on doing it, you will learn very much!

Finally, I would like to do again a blog the next year. Now, I’m afraid because I think I won’t have new topics to talk about. But summer is coming, and I still have to live many more experiences! Also, the world doesn’t ever stop for a minute…so, next year, I might write about lots and lots of things!

MY OPINION ESSAY

“WHEN WILL WE LEARN TO RESPECT OUR WORLD?”

It seems to me that we have never treated our world properly. In my opinion, we might destroy our planet if we don’t start thinking ideas to change its bad situation and try to conserve everything that surrounds us.

I disagree with people who say that we haven’t caused climate change and also greenhouse effect. It’s clear that we are guilty of today's catastrophes. We are the only ones who have used polluting products and who have wasted so many raw materials even knowing that these facts would be bad for our planet.

Furthermore, I think that we want to have the best life (with all the comforts), but on the other hand we are not prepared to make any effort to get it, we just want to have everything done. And I think that this is wrong.
Maybe
if we stop thinking for a while we will realize that we have to work hard to get a better world. However, we could do this work all together and with a little participation from each one of us life would become more enjoyable and we would have everything that we needed.

I really believe that we aren’t aware of how much harm we’re causing to our planet. As a result, we don’t kick the habit of wasting water or using electricity when it’s not necessary or also running out raw materials when we could use alternative energies…and what about air pollution? If we went more by coach or by train our air would be purer. Anyway, sometimes I think that if our behaviour goes on being like this, we won’t ever be able to make the world a better place. In my opinion, if we don’t act soon it will be too late. With a global collaboration the world would be the place we have been dreaming of living.

In conclusion, I’d like to remind you that we only live once and life is something wonderful! So, with a little effort we could make the most of our days and the world would become a beautiful place as well. We would live without pollution or unnecessary wastes. We still have time in order to give our descendants the life they really deserve.

INFORMAL LETTER

9, Major Square
SANT PERE PESCADOR
GIRONA
24TH March 10

Dear Kieron,

I'm happy to hearing from you! Here everything's alright, but I'm still missing you!!
You asked me to recommend you some places to visit which weren't very far from my town. I've been thinking about it during the week and I definitely have chosen the most wonderful places in my point of view. Summer is coming, so maybe, staying for a couple of days in Sant Pere sunbathing yourself and swimming on the sea without any precupations could be a great idea.

Appart from Sant Pere, I recommend you to visit the most famous city around here. Did I mention Girona? I know that you're studying history and arts, so in my opinion you will love it- Girona is an old city and it's about one our away from St. Pere. You can go there by bus or by train. Its streets are completely amazing and everything seems another world. You can walk trough the city streets all day long and take a lot of photos, as you always do!
In Girona people are really cheerful and friendly, and I'm sure that you will enjoy this journey!

Anyway, it will be summer and probably you would like to spend your holidays enjoying our hot temperatures. To relax yourself and forget all your troubles I recommend you to go to Sant Martí d'Empúries. It's a small place, but the atmosphere is calm and relaxing. Many tourists visit it. The beach is gorgerous! It's my favourite beach! I could spend so many hours there... It reminds me of my childhood, when I didn't have to worry about anything.

As well, if you come here on summer you will need comfortable clothes and shoes, especially in white or light colours. At nights maybe you might wear trousers and jumpers because summer nights here are quite cold! Woow...I forgot it! Summer nights in Spain are really enjoyable...we will have fun together!:D

Write me a letter as soon as you can!

BEST WISHES!

Love,

Ariadna,, xxx

PS: Don't forget your camera, right? These holidays will be memorable!;)

READER ORAL TEST

1-Can you summarize the book in two minutes?

The story is about Dashwood’s family. Mr Dashwood was an old and rich man who lived in a country house called Norland Park. He had great lands on his own. He had a nephew who was married twice. With the first woman he had a son called John, and with the second he had three beautiful daughters: Elinor, Marianne and Margaret. Mr Dashwood died because he was an eldest man. His nephew, Mr. Henry Dashwood inherited his fortune, but unfortunately he died the next year. Before his death, he asked to his son to keep a promise: he had to take care of his step mother and his step sisters, and give them enough money to live happily. John promised it without any doubt. All the family was sad because of their loss, everyone except Mrs John Dashwood. She convinced her husband to give only the necessary money to his step family, but not as much as his father said, and also she decided to move to Norland and appropriate of everything. Mrs Dashwood, very shocked for it decided to look for a new home and move there. Finally, she and her daughters moved to a cottage situated in Barton, in Devonshire. It was enough to forget all the worries they had in Norland and just remember the good moments lived there. Before moving, Elinor, the eldest daughter was really fond of Edward Ferrars, Mrs John Dashwood’s brother. They promised to see each other soon. In Devonshire, the girls met wonderful neighbours; they were John and Lady Middleton. John was really cheerful, but his wife was quite shy. One day, John decided to introduce them a friend of him. He was Colonel Brandon, a dull man who was very rich. Colonel Brandon soon was fond of Marianne but it wasn’t reciprocal. Some days later, while Marianne was going for a walk with his sister Margaret she felt down, and after it she couldn’t walk. Suddenly, like a miracle, a handsome boy went there to rescue her. He was Willoughby, and since that moment they were inseparable.
Dashwood girl’s life was really different, they were always in parties, visiting wonderful places, meeting friendly people…and all thanks for Mr John Middleton. Things couldn’t be better, but everything went wrong early… Marianne discovered the truth about Willoughby; he left her because he was trying to get the fortune of a young girl to be able then to receive an inheritance of a relative. It wasn’t all, Edward as far as he was concerned was lying too. He was engaged with another girl, he did it some years ago. Elinor knew it by Edward’s engaged. Everything was for the money, but anyway it hurt the sisters. After sending some letters to Willoughby, Marianne realized that he didn’t really love her, and that maybe she had to be happy with another man. Many years went by but the pain was still with them. Marianne felt ill, and she could die, but finally she recovered. One day, unexpectedly, Edward came back to apologize for everything. He wasn’t married as all of them thought; it was his brother who finally married to the girl. He said to Elinor how much he loved her, and they got married and moved to another town. Marianne realized that she could be happy with Colonel Brandon, and after marrying him she loved him with all her heart. After all, Mrs Dashwood was really proud of her daughters, and finally they have all their happy ending!

2-Is there a mystery sentence or a turning point in the story?

Yes! The story Is full of mysteries but they’re two of them who changed completely the life of the main characters.
First, the dark side of the handsome Willoughby. He seemed to be a young and good-looking boy and as well he seemed to be really fond of Marianne. But Colonel Brandon soon realized that Willoughby was two-faced. Mrs. Smith, a distant relative of him who was very rich, was always putting pressure on him to marry him to a wealthy lady and be able some day to inherit Mrs. Smith’s wealth. He was so weighed that he was taking advantage of an innocent young girl quite rich while he was in some sense engaged with Marianne. He stole everything to the young girl, and he broke Marianne’s heart with all his lies. When Marianne knew it she fell in a depression. She was imagining all day that Willoughby would be able to change his behaviour and they would live happily together. But days passed, and anything changed her situation. Marianne was crying all day remembering all the good moments lived with him.
On the second hand, there’s the mystery of Edward Ferrars. Everybody knew the attachment between Edward and Elinor, but things early went wrong...Edward’s engaged, quite jealous, told herself to Elinor that they get engaged some years ago and since that day they were very happy together. She also said that they would marry soon, and that he couldn’t live without her. Elinor was really strong, and she never wanted to express her feelings, she preferred always to hide everything inside herself. Elinor had always hopes with Edward but she could see how cruel reality is.

The turning point in the story happens when Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters decide to leave Sussex, and move to Barton to start a new life. They knew that they would always remember the past, but they wanted to forget all the troubles they were living in Sussex, and be happy again.

3-When and where does the story take place?

The story takes place in the 80th century. At first, the story is followed in Sussex in the house of Norland, where the main characters were born. Then, it takes place in Devonshire in a place called Barton. Barton was situated four miles north of the city of Exter and it was quite far from Norland.

4-Who are the main characters in the story? What’s their role?

The main characters are Mrs. Dashwood and her three daughters: Elinor, the eldest, Marianne and Margaret. All they were really kind and beautiful. Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters had suffered the death of her husband and their father respectively. After this accident Mrs. Dashwood had to take care of her daughters more than ever. She decided to be always by their side and help them as much as she was able to. Because of it she gets admirable in the story. She achieved make their family happy again.

Elinor was the eldest daughter. She was only nineteen years old but she was always persuadating his mother when she had to take a decision in any subject. She had strong feelings and even she was having the worst day of her life she wanted always to look cheerful at the others.

Marianne was a seventeen-year-old girl. She was the most beautiful daughter, and in spite of her similarities with her sisters, Marianne always expressed her feelings to everyone. Also, she was usually upset thinking about true love, and about her blue prince. But during the story some facts make her change her thinks.

5-Choose one character (main or secondary) and describe him/her.

I’ve chosen one of the main characters: Mrs. Dashwood. I really admire her behaviour and that’s the reason I decided to describe her. She’s a beautiful woman and she’s forty years old. She always looks younger than she really is. Mrs. Dashwood is a glamorous woman, and she’s always well-dressed. I can’t know exactly how her appearance is because in the story it isn’t explained. But I imagine her as a tall and quite thin woman, with smart hairstyles. Her behaviour is easier to describe: she’s a cheerful woman, she’s kind-hearted and she’s really sensitive. Because of it she usually feels insecure. Luckily she always follows her eldest daughter advice, and then she sees everything clear. During the story appear some problems which affect her daughters and make them very sad. Obviously in those moments Elinor isn’t able to give some advice, so Mrs. Dashwood has to resolve everything in her own. She was brilliant on it! With all this, I could see that she’s a great mother who would do anything to make their daughters happy. Mrs. Dashwood is very kind-hearted and she has so much love to give. In spite of her insecurities she passed these good qualities to her daughters. After the pain for her husband’s death she enjoyed every moment with her loved ones and they lived together a lot of good moments to remember.

6-Can you identify with any character? Why?

I feel much identified with Marianne. She’s seventeen years old, as I am. Like me, it sometimes seems that she’s dreaming awake and as well she always builds her hopes up with everything. But then, she always gets hurt with it because things aren’t always as perfect as we imagine them in our head.
Marianne lived the hardest moment of her life when Willoughby left her. After that, she felt like anything could have sense and she thought that she could never go on with her life. That’s the other thing which I’m identified with, because I lived it recently and I know exactly how that feeling is. When it happens to you, you feel as you are empty, and even living surrounded of thousand millions of people you feel so alone.
Finally, Marianne found someone to heal her hurts and happiness returned to her life once more.

7-Choose your favourite moment in the story

My favourite moment happens when the story is ending. When Edward came back to declare his love to Elinor and marry her. With it, Elinor was happy than ever and her sister Marianne was always by her side. She finally see how they dreams came true. After a few weeks Marianne also found happiness with Colonel Brandon. Both sisters had suffered very much for love but they helped each other in everything and finally they get what they deserve to live happily ever after.

8-Which new key words have you learnt to understand the story?

I’ve learnt so many new words! At first, I was looking up in the dictionary all time because there were many words I didn’t understand. But then I only had to look up to difficult words because I remembered the others. When I didn’t understand a word I wrote it in my notebook with its meaning because I don’t wanted to forget them! I learnt new words as...NOR, ATTACHEMENT, COTTAGE, DELIGHT, FOOLISH, CERTAIN, BLUSH, SOBBING, ATONISH, PRAISE, ELDEST, BEG, INHERIT, REQUEST...and so much more!

9-Provide an alternative ending.

In my opinion, the ending of the story wasn’t predictable but I liked it. If I had to change something in this story maybe it would be Willoughby’s behaviour, or even replace him for another handsome boy. The only thing I don’t agree very much is the engage between Marianne and Colonel Brandon. He’s a good man and he takes care of her, but perhaps he’s too old to marry her. The rest of the story is not perfect, but at least it has troubles that we could live ourselves, so I wouldn’t change it. I only would add a character kind-hearted and with good intentions. Someone who could never do anything to hurt Dashwood’s family but at the same time, someone very mysterious. Maybe a boy with a dramatic past or with another trouble, but something which many people could be identified with. I don’t know exactly if I would write a happy ending, but the only thing I know for sure is that it would be romantic.

10-Would you recommend this book? Why?

I absolutely recommend this book because it talks about love, about wealth, about sadness, happiness...well about things which everyone can be identified with! One of the things that I liked the most is that it’s not the typical story where everyone is rich and happy but it’s a wonderful story. The main characters are all full of love and they’re always together in their bad moments. It doesn’t avoid sad situations and they have to fight very hard to be happy. Maybe they have many reasons to leave it but thanks to their great feelings they were able to go on with their effort!

In story’s time people get married for interest. They only wanted wealth and comforts, but Dashwood girls proved/showed that it isn’t enough to be happy. Story’s moral is that we don’t love people for their material goods, we simply love people for their virtues and their faults.
